Timeless Atlanta: Oakland Cemetery

by EV Atlanta

In a city known for its ever-evolving skyline, Oakland Cemetery offers a striking contrast: quiet, historic, and deeply rooted in the soul of Atlanta. Far from just a resting place, this 48-acre Victorian garden cemetery is one of the city’s most unexpected luxuries: an open-air museum, green space, and cultural hub wrapped into one.

For those who know Atlanta well—or are just beginning to discover its layers—Oakland offers a sense of timelessness. It’s not just where history is preserved. It’s where the past and present meet under a canopy of live oaks, marble angels, and skyline views.

Architecture, Art & Atlanta’s Story

Established in 1850, Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place of some of the city’s most iconic figures, from author Margaret Mitchell to civil rights leaders, mayors, and musicians. But the real draw lies in the details: hand-carved monuments, ornate mausoleums, and winding brick paths that showcase 19th-century craftsmanship in every corner.

For design-minded homeowners and architecture enthusiasts, Oakland is a masterclass in artistry and reverence.

Events that Elevate Community

Oakland isn’t static. Throughout the year, it plays host to some of Atlanta’s most beloved cultural events, like the Victorian-inspired Sunday in the Park, the after-dark Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween tours, and seasonal evening strolls that blend storytelling with skyline views.

These gatherings offer something rare: a true sense of place. For residents of nearby neighborhoods like Grant Park, Cabbagetown, and Reynoldstown, they’re more than events; they’re rituals.

A Lifestyle Defined by Legacy

Living near Oakland Cemetery isn’t just about location, it’s about connection. To community, to culture, to character. Homes surrounding the cemetery reflect that richness, from restored Victorians and Craftsman bungalows to modern builds designed with intention and history in mind.

Whether you’re enjoying a quiet afternoon walk, joining a guided tour, or attending a twilight concert, Oakland reminds us that beauty, memory, and meaning can all exist in the same space.

Why It Matters for Homebuyers and Sellers

Neighborhoods anchored by landmarks like Oakland hold long-term value, offering not just convenience, but authenticity. For buyers, they represent a chance to live near something iconic. For sellers, proximity to cultural touchstones adds market appeal that’s both emotional and enduring.

Making a Difference At The Oakland Cemetery Cleanup

Engel & Völkers Atlanta participated in it’s sixth annual gardens landscaping & beautification volunteer efforts at Historic Oakland Cemetary. The event was attended by over 30 E&V Atlanta Advisors & staff with their shovels and gloves in the dirt and smiles on their faces. “We did mulching, weeding, gravel distribution for pathways and more… I was so impressed with the amount of effort and hard work the Advisors put in on this beautiful day,” says Charlotte Christian, EV Advisor and Oakland Cemetary Board Member.
