5 Ways to Create Your Meditation Space

by EV Atlanta

Many of us have been spending more time at home and of course, this means more time to relax and meditate. Having a space where we can get away to clear our minds can make the difference in our everyday moods.

“The soothing power of repetition is at the heart of meditation. Focusing on the breath, ignoring thoughts, and repeating a word or phrase – a mantra – creates the biological response of relaxation”, Stan Chapman, PhD, a psychologist in the Center for Pain Medicine at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, says.

Find a quiet space

The key to meditation is having the ability to focus and clear your mind. If there’s somewhere in your home that makes you feel good, but is also quiet with minimal traffic, that’s a great place to start. Paying attention to the amount of natural light, as this typically enhances your mood automatically.

If there isn’t a room in your home that works, consider an outdoor space – perhaps your patio, your deck, or even a garden. You want a place that allows you to relax your mind and your body, without distractions.

Clear the clutter

Once you’ve found your meditation area, clean it up and make sure it’s free of any distracting clutter. Before your mind can be cleared, your space must be first. This also means your meditation area shouldn’t be in the kitchen or your office, as you want it to be as minimalistic as possible.

If needed, consider clearing the room of items to open the space up a bit. Leave only the necessities, if possible. This means just enough for seating like a few pillows on a rug, small chair, etc.

Bring in some nature

If you aren’t going to already bed meditating outside, perhaps bringing in a few plants can help set the tone of the room better. Nature is organically relaxing, so it makes sense to bring some natural elements to your space. If you can, bring in a few potted plants and add a small water foundation.

In fact, water fountains are meditation staple. Water sounds have long been used in meditation to create a soothing atmosphere for our minds. Science suggests that the rhythm of ocean waves and tides coming in and out can affect the rhythm of the neuronal “waves” in our brain, encouraging a more peaceful pace of thought.

Aromatherapy

Aromas play a huge part in our moods and daily emotions, and there are many ways to bring in smells that make you feel your best. From candles, to incense, to oil burning diffusers, you have an array of options to choose from.

Remove the Tech

In society today, our main distractions come from our technology. Many sources suggest removing TVs, computers, alarm clocks, or anything that may get your brain buzzing again. If you can, put your phone on silent and place it in another room, eliminating the need to run to your phone when you hear a ‘ping’ or new message come in.

Take what you have learned here and start looking around your home. You just may be surprised at what room brings you the relaxing feeling you are looking for.
